MLO Narrative:
The fifth major learning outcome (MLO) is cultural internalization and language immersion. This MLO requires students to display their understanding, internalization, and new perspectives of Hispanic communities through involvement in authentic Hispanic cultural and linguistic environments. To fulfill this requirement, I took the course SPAN 301S: Service Learning in the Chicano / Latino Community (Fall 2020).
The goal of the course SPAN 301S is for students to enhance personal and professional communication as well as classroom discussions and oral presentations in Spanish. The goal of this course are met through student involvement in community projects that engage students in matters of justice, compassion, diversity and social responsibility. Aside from enhancing communication skills, this course also helps students effectively build multicultural communities. As a final project that demonstrates my understanding of an issue related to Hispanic cultures and communities, I worked on “Machismo dentro nuestras comunidades y cultura”. To complete this assignment, I interviewed a few individuals of the Hispanic community. In addition to the responses shared by the interviewed, I also tied in examples of machismo in Hispanic literature. As a result of connecting literature and real life experiences of the Hispanic community, I was able to understand how deeply rooted the misogynist ideologies are within the Hispanic community, but also how people are becoming aware of this issue and practicing how to reduce the spread of this ideology.
Having the opportunity to practice my cultural and community awareness in a Hispanic setting has been invaluable to me. As a result of this course, I have understood the importance of being aware of cultural issues, and culture in general, before communicating with a new community. Moving forward, I really appreciate becoming aware of different cultural issues, but also cultural practices within different communities. Taking into consideration that culture and customs can range regionally, moving forward, I also understand the importance of being aware of these cultural differences for effective communication.
