I completed my Service Learning at the Monterey Adult School, a school in the Monterey Peninsula School District. The Monterey Adult School has three goals: language acquisition, digital literacy, and academic/career guidance. My role as a Service Learning Student was to work closely with the adults on their journey to learning English as a second language. My service learning experience allowed me to explore the cultural and linguistic characteristics of each student. In addition to sharing cuisines of our cultures, I also got to review, teach, and explain different grammatical rules for the English language. The dialogue, explanations, feedback, and repetition allowed students to improve their English, at least one level, while completing my service. The experience of working with these individuals, and seeing their progress was very rewarding and fulfilling. Having completed my service learning hours at a site that practiced language acquisition and bilingualism, succeeding learning about this became the perfect supplement education in seeing how language acquisition works for adults.
