Course Narrative:
During the Fall 2021 semester, I took the course SPAN 305: Spanish for the Professions. This course meets the requirements for Major Learning Outcomes (MLOs) 1 and 3. Where MLO 1 requires students to communicate effectively in Spanish in three modes: interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational, and in a culturally appropriate manner in a variety of social and professional settings and circumstances at the Advanced Low level of Language proficiency, according to ACTFL Guidelines. On the other hand, MLO 3 requires students to develop an understanding of thinking, behavioral practices, and cultural products of Hispanic societies.
Upon completion of this course, I have gained knowledge of appropriate terminology in a professional setting, such as a doctor’s office or a human resources office. Throughout the course we participated in group discussion where we got to practice new vocabulary, orally and written. For example, for our assignment “cuenta bancaria,” we were responsible for creating a script using the appropriate vocabulary to open a bank account, in Spanish. Prior to having completed this assignment, we had reviewed vocabulary that is used when opening a bank account, but also saw an example that helped us practice using the vocabulary in a mock situation. Despite it being a mock conversation, I felt that I was able to gain the confidence to practice using Spanish in a professional setting, in addition to using it in a classroom.
The course SPAN 305 has allowed me the opportunity to develop my Spanish-speaking skills. As a result of the course, I have practiced becoming aware of my audience, and using the appropriate terminology in professional settings. To build on what I learned in this course, I hope to continue to learn appropriate registers in the legal setting by obtaining a certification in interpreting and translating.
