Course Narrative:
During the Fall of 2021, I took the course SPAN 300: Pre-Capstone for Spanish Majors. The course fulfills Major Learning Outcome (MLO) 6, which requires students to learn and use appropriate research and technology methods to collect, manage, and analyze technology-based resources to develop and produce scholarly work.
The goal of the course is to introduce Spanish major students to explore various topics relating to the program and research methods, in order to prepare us for our final project: capstone. Upon finalizing our group, topic, and research questions, at the end of the semester my group and I completed our Capstone Project Proposal. The proposal consisted of our project outline with the tentative: title, research questions, abstract, key words, and one paragraph of the literature review; an annotated bibliography, a result of our initial research; and our capstone outline, the proposed schedule for completion of different components of our capstone paper. Resulting from the extensive work in finding reliable sources, I have gained knowledge in using appropriate databases for scholarly sources. Having been able to learn and practice this throughout the course allowed me to feel confident in doing research for other courses. One of the main things that resulted from this practice was that of learning to filter out sources based on keywords, the author, and the publisher. Although, at the moment, I do not have interest in pursuing research, I hope to continue to use the knowledge gained throughout the course in future assignments, but also when seeking to find information from reliable sources in my personal life.
