MLO Narrative:
The goal of the sixth major learning outcome (MLO 6) is for students to learn and use appropriate research and technology methods to collect, manage, and analyze technology-based resources to develop and produce scholarly work. To fulfill this MLO I took WLC 300: Major ProSeminar (Fall 2020), SPAN 300: Pre-Capstone for Spanish Majors (Fall 2021), and WLC 400: WLC Major Capstone (Spring 2022).
In line with the requirements for this MLO, SPAN 300 prepared us for our capstone project. We were introduced and began the preparation for our capstone project. By starting on our capstone proposal and annotated bibliography, we were presented with different tools and databases that were available to us for our capstone. In collaboration with Dr. Carolyn Gonzalez, Kristen Chmelicek, and Daniela Tejeda, in WLC 400, we completed “The Meaning of Death in two essays from The Labyrinth of Solitude by Octavio Paz,” which will be presented at the 2022 WLC Capstone Festival. As suggested by the MLO, this project was the result of extensive research from technology-based resources, such as online articles.
While working on capstone, in SPAN 300 and WLC 400, I learned the long process of putting together a research paper, starting with deciding on a topic to explore, finding appropriate literature and sources, analyzing the information found, and drafting an academic paper. Although I knew this process would be a lot of work from the start, I had not realized how difficult it could be to find appropriate and fitting information. Finding this information was tedious for me, however, with the help of presentations by one of the CSUMB librarians, I was able to learn how to identify key words to help with the research process. Although this facilitated the research process, one thing that I will continue to learn and develop is annotating and learning to identify key ideas in a text. In addition to that, I will continue to learn how to synthesize in a clear and concise manner.
